ارنِست میلر هِمینگوی متولد ۲۱ ژوئیه ۱۸۹۹ و درگذشته ۲ ژوئیه ۱۹۶۱ از نویسندگان برجسته معاصر ایالات متحده آمریکا و برنده جایزه نوبل ادبیات است. او از پایه‌گذاران یکی از تأثیرگذارترین انواع ادبی، موسوم به وقایع‌نگاری ادبی شناخته می‌شود.
قدرت بیان و زبردستی همینگوی در توصیف شخصیت‌های داستانی به گونه ای بود که او را پدر ادبیات مدرن لقب داده‌اند.
پدرش پزشک و مادرش خانه دار و سفت و سخت پابند مذهب بود. ارنست میان شش فرزند دومین پسر خانواده بود. او در مورد زندگی نامه اش چنین می گوید:
به طور کلی پدر و مادرم با هم هیچ توافق اخلاقی نداشتند و از این لحاظ کل خانواده و به خصوص من دچار گرفتاری و ناراحتی بودیم.
